Following the longest run of success in team history, Carroll will step down as head coach in Seattle.
The decision appears to be more of a separation than a termination, but one that the 72-year-old Carroll was compelled to accept after negotiations with ownership.
Carroll will take on an unspecified advising role inside the organisation, according to a statement issued by owner Jody Allen on Wednesday.
Although Carroll wanted to stay in his current position and see if he could produce another championship club.

"I competed pretty hard to be the coach, just so you know," Carroll remarked at a tearful goodbye press conference.
